Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
Quetta sits high up in the mountains, so it never gets the brutal heat you find lower down in Pakistan. The best windows are March to April and October to November. Days are mild, around 20 to 26°C, and nights are cool enough for a jacket.
April is fresh and green, and the orchards around the city start to bloom. October is the driest month in our data, with sunny skies and very little rain. That makes it good for day trips to Hanna Lake, the Hazarganji Chiltan National Park (home of the rare markhor, a wild mountain goat), and the drive to Ziarat's juniper forests.
Travelling with kids or older relatives? These months are the easiest. You can walk the stalls of Liaquat Bazaar and Jinnah Road without wilting.
Summer: warm days, cool nights
May to September is dry and sunny. June and July are the warmest, with highs around 35°C. That's hot at midday, but the air is very dry, and evenings drop to a comfortable level. It's far gentler than Sindh or Punjab, which is why Quetta has long been a summer escape.
This is when the fruit is good. Look for grapes, apricots, pomegranates and apples at the markets. Try sajji, a whole roasted lamb or chicken, and Quetta's famous Kandahari-style bread. August brings the most rain of the summer, 59 mm, but it comes in short bursts rather than long grey spells.
Summer is also the busiest time for domestic visitors. Expect more people in Ziarat, and school holidays bring families from other parts of Pakistan.
Winter: cold, quiet and crisp
December to February is cold. Nights fall to around freezing, and January is the coldest month, with lows of 0°C. Days are bright but chilly, and many homes rely on gas heaters. Snow is possible on the surrounding hills, and Ziarat can turn white and very cold.
If you like quiet places and don't mind the chill, winter is rewarding. Bazaars are calmer, and hot tea and dried fruit stalls feel especially welcome. A bowl of Quetta's hearty mutton dishes is the right reward after a cold afternoon.
Winter also has a bit more rain, with 35 to 42 mm in January to March. Check road conditions before heading to higher ground.
Security and travel rules in Balochistan can change, so check current advice from your government before you go. Festival dates, such as Eid, follow the lunar calendar and move each year, so confirm them close to your trip.
