When to go to Multan: a seasonal guide

November to February: the sweet spot

Winter is when Multan is at its best. Days are mild and dry, and the sky is mostly clear. November feels like early autumn, with highs around 30°C. By January it's cooler, and the nights get properly cold, so you'll want a jacket after dark.

This is the season for walking. You can wander around the old Qasim Bagh fort area, then visit the shrines of Bahauddin Zakariya and Shah Rukn-e-Alam without baking on the way. The blue-tiled shrines look best in clear winter light. Stop for sohan halwa, the dense, sweet local treat, and try a glass of sugarcane juice from a street cart.

Winter is also the busiest time for visitors, especially around Christmas and New Year, when many Pakistanis travel. It's still calm compared with big cities like Lahore.

March and October: shoulder months

March is warm and pleasant, though it's the wettest month of the cooler half, with 38 mm over about four days. Showers pass quickly. Spring is a good time for the Basant kite season in Punjab, but the festival has been restricted in recent years, so don't plan your trip around it.

October is Fair, not great. Afternoons are still hot at 37°C, but the air is dry and the sun is strong, with the sunniest days of the year. Evenings feel kinder. If you can only come then, sightsee in the morning and rest at midday.

April to September: heat and monsoon

Be honest with yourself about this stretch. Multan is known as the City of Saints, but it's also famous for its heat. June is the hottest month, with highs of 45°C and nights that only fall to 32°C. May is almost as fierce and very dry. Midday outdoors is tough, and many locals stay inside until late afternoon.

July and August bring the monsoon, the rainy season. Rain falls on six or seven days a month, and the air turns sticky. The rain doesn't cool things much. Roads can flood, and travel between cities may be slow.

Still, summer is the low season. If you don't mind the heat and want quiet shrines and cheaper rooms, you'll find both. Plan to be indoors from noon to about four.

Islamic festivals shift each year. Urs celebrations, which mark the death anniversaries of saints, draw crowds to the shrines. Check dates for the Urs of Bahauddin Zakariya before you book, since they follow the lunar calendar.
