Visiting Multan in September
September's late-summer heat
September still feels punishingly hot in Multan. Days reach 40°C, and nights stay warm at around 27°C. The air is fairly dry, but that won't make walking around in the afternoon comfortable. August is hotter and wetter; September brings less rain, with showers on only a few days.
Save the old city's lanes and outdoor sights, such as Multan Fort and its Qasim Bagh grounds, for the cooler parts of the day. Indoor visits to the shrines of Shah Rukn-e-Alam and Bahauddin Zakariya are easier in the heat. The cooler months from December to February suit long sightseeing days better.
A quieter month
Pakistan's Defence Day falls on September 6. It's marked with ceremonies and tributes to the armed forces, though it isn't a major visitor festival centred on Multan. Islamic festivals move each year, so don't assume Eid will fall in September.
If you hate crowds, you'll find fewer visitors than in Multan's cooler winter months. September is a quieter, low-season choice, and accommodation may cost less than in peak winter. The trade-off is the heat: some travellers will find the savings aren't worth limiting their time outdoors.
Make the heat work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor stops short, and make the shrine courtyards a brief visit rather than a long walk. Multan's blue-tiled tombs are worth seeing, but the midday sun can make even short distances feel tiring.
A useful local trick is to use a rickshaw between the old-city sights instead of walking from one shrine to another. Ask to be dropped near the entrance to Shah Rukn-e-Alam's mausoleum, then visit nearby Qasim Bagh when the day has cooled. If you can choose your month, October is more comfortable, and December to February are better still.
