Winter: the best time to go

December to February is when Hyderabad is at its easiest. Days are warm and dry, and the sun is out for most of them. January is the coolest month, with highs around 25°C and nights near 10°C. You'll want a jacket after dark, especially on a rooftop or near the Indus.

This is the season for walking. You can explore the old bazaars, like Resham Bazaar and the stalls around Shahi Bazaar, without wilting. Pay a visit to the Talpur-era tombs on Ghulam Shah Kalhoro's hill, the Kalhora Tombs, and the Pacco Qillo fort, where the afternoon light is soft. Try the sweets, too. Hyderabad is known for its bombay-style halwa and rabri (thickened sweet milk), and they taste better when you aren't melting.

Winter is also high season for visitors, though crowds here stay modest. Hotels fill up around weddings and long weekends more than tourist peaks.

March, October and November: the shoulder months

November is the sweet spot outside winter. It's dry, with highs near 32°C and low humidity. October is dry too, but still hot at 37°C, so keep your sightseeing for mornings and evenings. March warms up quickly, from pleasant early on to properly hot by the end.

If you're visiting family or going to a Sindhi wedding, these months are busy and lively. Check the Islamic calendar, because Ramadan and Eid move about eleven days earlier each year. During Ramadan, many cafés open only after sunset, and evenings turn social and late. Eid brings crowded markets and packed buses.

April to September: heat, then humid rain

April to June is brutal. May is the hottest month, with highs around 43°C, and the sun shines nearly 12 hours a day. Don't plan to walk around at midday. Do your sightseeing at dawn, then retreat indoors until the evening.

Monsoon arrives in July and August. August is the wettest month, with 91 mm over seven days, and humidity reaches 66%. The rain isn't constant, but it can flood streets and slow the roads. Temperatures drop a little, though the air feels sticky and heavy. September stays humid and hot, with highs near 38°C.

Is there any reason to come now? Prices and crowds are low, and the monsoon turns the countryside green. But for most travellers, it's a hard sell. If you must go, pick a hotel with reliable power backup and keep your plans flexible.
