Visiting Pyongyang in October
October weather
October is one of Pyongyang's best months to visit. Days feel cool and comfortable, while evenings turn chilly. Rain comes on a handful of days, but long spells of sunshine make outdoor sightseeing appealing.
You can walk around Kim Il Sung Square, visit the Juche Tower and take in views along the Taedong River without summer's sticky heat. The hills around the city are good for a gentle autumn walk, too. Save long outdoor plans for dry days; wet weather can make paths slippery. By evening, you may prefer an indoor stop to lingering outside.
Holidays and crowds
October 10 marks the founding of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party. Pyongyang may hold official events or celebrations, but don't assume there'll be a public parade. Some areas or sights can have restricted access around major events.
If you hate crowds, October is still calmer than many capital-city trips, but it's a popular time to visit North Korea. It shares the best-month spot with April and May, so expect more interest than in cold November. Tour costs are usually sold as part of organised trips, not like flexible hotel rates; don't count on October being a bargain month.
Make the most of your visit
With daylight fading earlier than in summer, keep outdoor sightseeing to the brighter part of the day. Pyongyang's cool evenings are a good time to try naengmyeon, cold buckwheat noodles, at a local restaurant.
Travelling with kids? The wide paths around the Mansudae Grand Monument make for an easier stroll than a steep hill walk.
One useful local tip: ask your guide about access before heading to the Juche Tower on October 10. Official events can change where visitors are allowed to go, and independent sightseeing isn't generally an option.
