Visiting Pyongyang in November
November: crisp and quiet
November feels like a quick step towards winter. Days reach around 9°C, while nights hover near freezing. Rain falls on several days, and the shorter daylight leaves less time for wandering outside. You can still visit Kim Il Sung Square, the Arch of Triumph and the riverside paths, but keep outdoor stops brief when the wind picks up.
The weather suits museums and indoor visits between walks. The Korean Central History Museum is a good pause from the cold. Long picnics or lingering on the Taedong River banks are less appealing now. December is colder and drier, while October is much milder, so November is a chilly middle ground.
A quieter month
November has no major international festival that reliably draws visitors to Pyongyang. North Korea celebrates Mother's Day on November 16, though public events may not be open to foreign visitors. Ask your tour guide what, if anything, you can see.
If you hate crowds, November may feel calmer than the popular April-to-May and October travel periods. But tourism in Pyongyang is tightly managed, so a quieter month doesn't mean you can explore independently. Tour options and costs depend on the approved itinerary, not just the season; don't count on a big off-season discount.
Make the cold work
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor stops short and use the metro to break up the day. Pyongyang's stations, including Puhung and Yonggwang, are sights in their own right, with grand halls and mosaics. Follow your guide's instructions, since visitors can't simply roam the system.
For an easy local meal, ask about naengmyeon at Okryu-gwan, the famous riverside restaurant. Its cold buckwheat noodles may sound odd on a chilly day, but they're a Pyongyang classic. Check that the restaurant is included in your itinerary, as access is arranged through your tour.
