Visiting Pyongyang in January
January weather
January in Pyongyang is properly cold. Days reach about -1°C, but nights drop to -10°C, and the short daylight window makes afternoons feel brief. It's also very dry, with just two rainy days on average.
The cold suits indoor stops such as the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Museum. A guided drive between sights can also work well. Long walks along the Taedong River or time outdoors at Kim Il Sung Square are less appealing when the cold bites. If you're hoping for a relaxed outdoor city break, April or October is a better fit.
New Year and crowds
New Year's Day is a public holiday, and Pyongyang marks it with celebrations. You may see events around Kim Il Sung Square, though access and schedules depend on the tour you're taking. January isn't a major visitor season like spring or autumn, so you'll generally encounter fewer foreign tourists.
Don't assume that means a bargain. Visits are arranged through guided tours, and package costs don't necessarily fall with the winter crowds. If you hate crowds, January may feel quieter, but your choice of tours can be more limited.
Making the most of winter
Plan your days around indoor sights and short outdoor visits. The city's metro is worth seeing, too: stations such as Puhung and Yonggwang have grand interiors, and the metro ride gives you a warm break from the streets. Your guide will handle access and travel arrangements.
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor stops short, especially after sunset, when it gets much colder. At a local restaurant, try hot Pyongyang naengmyeon, the city's buckwheat noodles; despite the name, it's traditionally served cold. Ask your guide whether it's on the menu, rather than expecting a warming winter dish.
