Puerto Vallarta Weather in May

May: hot and mostly dry

May feels like summer has arrived early. Afternoons can reach 36°C, and shade feels welcome around the Malecón or while browsing the shops in Zona Romántica. Rain is rare, so you're unlikely to lose a beach day to a downpour. Mornings suit a walk along the coast or a boat trip to Los Arcos; save longer walks and sightseeing for cooler hours.

The sea and sun can make a full afternoon outside tiring. Skip ambitious hikes in the midday heat, and don't expect much relief from the warm evenings. April is slightly cooler and drier, while June brings far more rain.

May events and crowds

Vallarta Pride usually brings events to Zona Romántica in May, including parades and parties. Dates vary, so check the programme before you go. May 1 is Mexico's Labor Day holiday; some businesses may close.

You'll generally find fewer visitors than during the December-to-February high season, and prices are often lower. Pride week is an exception: the neighbourhood gets busy, and rooms can cost more than earlier in the month.

Is May right for you?

For budget travellers who can handle sticky afternoons, May can mean quieter beaches and better-value stays. Families may prefer a pool break at midday, then a stroll along the Malecón when the sun eases.

For a practical local tip, take a taxi or bus up to the Vallarta Botanical Garden, south of town, rather than tackling its steep trails in the afternoon heat. The garden's shaded paths make a welcome change from the exposed waterfront. Ask about the bus marked for El Tuito; it runs along the highway toward the garden.
