Warm days, passing showers

December feels warm and tropical in Plymouth, with daytime highs around 27°C. Showers are common, but they often leave plenty of time for outdoor plans. The sea and coastal views still make a boat trip worthwhile, while cloudy spells can soften the strong sun.

Rain can make rough ground muddy, so don't count on a long, dry walk. Plymouth itself is an abandoned town inside Montserrat's volcanic exclusion zone, not a place you can freely wander. If you hate crowds, December is generally quieter than the January-to-March peak season.

Christmas and festival time

Montserrat's Christmas Festival runs through December and into the New Year, with local music, dance and cultural events. It's a good chance to hear calypso and soca alongside the island's holiday celebrations. The schedule can vary, so check which events are happening during your stay.

Christmas and New Year bring more visitors than an ordinary December week. That can mean less choice in places to stay, even though Plymouth isn't a busy sightseeing hub. Compared with the peak months, the rest of December is usually calmer.

Make the coast your viewpoint

You'll get the clearest sense of Plymouth from the water or from an approved viewpoint outside the exclusion zone. Ask locally about authorised boat trips along the coast; access to the buried town is restricted for safety. Don't try to enter it on your own.

Travelling with kids? A guided coastal trip gives them a memorable view without asking them to tackle muddy trails. If rain interrupts your plans, head back toward Little Bay, where you can enjoy the shore and watch the weather pass. Check that sea conditions suit your chosen boat trip before setting out.
