April weather

April feels warm and humid in Plymouth, with daytime highs around 27°C and nights staying close to 26°C. You'll get plenty of sunshine, but showers are part of the month too. They can interrupt a walk, then leave the air feeling sticky.

The weather works well for coastal views and relaxed sightseeing. It's less suited to long, exposed walks in the middle of the day. Keep plans flexible, especially if you're heading towards the island's volcanic landscape.

Easter and quieter days

Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in Montserrat, so April may bring church services and family gatherings. Easter dates change each year. Don't expect a large festival programme in Plymouth itself: the former capital was buried by volcanic eruptions and remains largely abandoned.

If you hate crowds, April can feel calmer than the busy January-to-March season. But Easter brings more local activity, and visitor numbers can rise around the holiday. Prices may be less pressured than in peak winter, though availability and costs vary.

Plymouth isn't an ordinary town to explore on foot. Much of it lies in the Soufrière Hills volcano exclusion zone, where access is restricted. Take in the ruins from an authorised viewpoint or with a permitted local guide rather than trying to enter on your own.

For a clear view across the buried capital, ask locally about access to Jack Boy Hill. The viewpoint looks towards the volcano and Plymouth, but cloud can hide the scene. Travelling with kids? Pair the stop with a visit to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, where you can learn why the old capital was abandoned.
