April: warm beach days

April feels hot and humid, with warm evenings and plenty of sunshine. Rain is limited compared with May, though brief showers can still interrupt a beach afternoon. The sea and beaches suit swimming, and the long days leave time for a stroll along Quinta Avenida after the sun eases.

You'll also have good conditions for visiting the Maya ruins at Tulum or swimming in a cenote. Save long, exposed walks for cooler parts of the day; the midday heat can make sightseeing tiring. For families, a beach morning followed by a shady lunch near Parque Los Fundadores is easier than an all-day outdoor plan.

Easter and local celebrations

Semana Santa, the week before Easter, can fall in April. When it does, Mexican families head to the coast, and Playa del Carmen's beaches and Quinta Avenida get much busier. Día del Niño on April 30 is a Mexican celebration for children, often marked with family activities.

Crowds and prices depend on Easter's timing. The holiday period is among the busiest parts of spring, while the rest of April is usually calmer than that peak. April is still part of the popular February-to-April season, so it's generally busier than May, when rainfall increases.

A handy local tip

For a quieter swim, visit a cenote near Playa del Carmen rather than relying on the busiest stretch of central beach. Ask locally about current access and transport, as cenotes vary in how easy they are to reach.

If you're taking the ferry to Cozumel, the terminal is right by the centre. Quinta Avenida is an easy walk away, so you can explore before or after your crossing without arranging a separate ride.
