June: hot and rainy

June feels sticky from morning to night. Highs reach 29°C, and nights stay warm at 27°C. Rain falls on 20 days, often in showers that interrupt a beach afternoon. The sea and sand still suit a swim, but leave room in your plans for a wet spell.

Cloud and humidity make long walks feel tiring. Visit Quinta Avenida or the Frida Kahlo Museum between showers, and save a cenote visit for a rainy spell. Skip long, exposed outings to Tulum's ruins if the heat feels draining. June has 13.2 hours of daylight, but only 5.8 hours of sun a day on average.

Events and the feel of town

Mexico's Navy Day falls on June 1. It's a national observance, though it isn't a reason to expect a large festival in Playa del Carmen. June doesn't have the same well-known local event draw as the town's busier holiday periods.

You'll usually find fewer visitors than in the high season from December through April. June is also before Mexico's main school-holiday rush in July and August. That can mean better rates than peak months, though prices vary. Couples who prefer a quieter Quinta Avenida may like the calmer pace, but the heat and rain aren't ideal for everyone.

Make rainy spells useful

Rainfall reaches 191 mm, far more than in May, so don't count on a full day outdoors. June is a poor month for predictable beach weather, and February to April are better choices if sunshine is your priority.

For a practical local plan, take the ferry from Playa's terminal to Cozumel when the forecast looks clearer there. Keep your return flexible if showers disrupt your day. After rain, head to a covered restaurant near Parque Fundadores for cochinita pibil, slow-roasted pork served in tortillas.
