Playa del Carmen Weather in May

May: warm, with showers

May feels hot and humid in Playa del Carmen, even after sunset. Days reach 29°C, and nights stay close to that. Rain falls on 11 days, often in showers rather than all-day washouts. The sea and shady streets can be a welcome break from the sticky afternoon air.

You can swim, snorkel or explore the shaded paths at Xcaret. A shower may interrupt a beach day, so keep your plans flexible. Sargassum seaweed can also reach the shore around this time, making some beaches less inviting. The amount varies, so don't count on a clear stretch of sand.

Holidays and local plans

May Day, on May 1, is a public holiday in Mexico. Some businesses may close, while beach and tourist areas still have places open. Mother's Day on May 10 is widely marked; you may notice families gathering for meals.

Cinco de Mayo falls in May, but it's not a major holiday across Mexico. Don't expect Playa del Carmen to shut down for it. If you're visiting Cozumel, take the ferry from the terminal by Parque Fundadores. A windy or rainy spell can make the crossing less pleasant, so keep a backup plan on land.

Quieter than peak season

May comes after the busier February-to-April stretch and before wetter June. You'll generally find fewer visitors than in peak winter months, and prices can ease, though exact deals vary. May can still feel busy around the holiday weekends.

Budget travellers may like the calmer feel, but the humid afternoons can wear you down. Plan a shaded walk along Quinta Avenida, then save the open-air beach time for a cooler part of the day.
