The rainy season runs over October; October is the wettest month with about 116 mm (4.6 in) of rain.
When to go to Philipsburg: a seasonal guide
December to April: dry and busy
This is the season most people come for, and it's easy to see why. Days are sunny, the air feels a bit lighter, and rain tends to be a short shower rather than a washout. February and March are the driest months, with rain on only four days each. Evenings on Front Street, the main strip of shops and bars, are comfortable without being sticky.
It's also high season. Cruise ships fill the Great Bay waterfront on many days, and hotels fill up too. If you hate crowds, aim for the shoulder ends: early December or April. Carnival is the big event. It runs for about two weeks around April, with parades, music and the crowning of a queen. Book a room early if you want to be there.
May to July: warmer and quieter
Rain picks up in May, with showers on about 13 days. They're usually quick, and the sun comes back. It's warmer now, and the sea feels like a bath. Sint Maarten also has a big Heineken Regatta in early March, so if sailing is your thing, that's a dry-season highlight. Summer is when you'll find beaches like Little Bay with more room to spread out. Travelling with kids? This is a good window. School holidays bring a few more families in July, but nothing like winter.
Prices tend to drop outside peak season, and some smaller restaurants close for a break. It's worth checking before you set your heart on one.
August to November: hot, wet and hurricane risk
Be honest with yourself about this stretch. August and September have rain on 17 days each, and October is the wettest month, with 116 mm. It's also the heart of Atlantic hurricane season, and some hotels and restaurants shut for a few weeks. If you go, buy travel insurance that covers storms and keep your plans loose.
The upside is real, though. You'll get the lowest crowds, the cheapest stays and a slower island. Showers often come in bursts, so mornings can still be good for snorkelling or a ferry trip to Saint Martin's French side.
November eases back toward good weather, and by December the island is ready for visitors again. If you want a balance of fair weather and fewer people, late November is a smart pick.
