Best Time to Visit Gustavia
Saint Barthelemy · weather by month, temperature and rainfall
The best time to visit Gustavia is December to April, when the weather is at its most comfortable for sightseeing and time outdoors. Temperatures barely change through the year: highs stay between 26°C and 29°C, so rainfall matters far more than heat when choosing when to go. The rainy season runs over October; October is the wettest month with about 116 mm (4.6 in) of rain.
When to go to Gustavia: a seasonal guide
December to April: dry and busy
This is the best stretch, and everyone knows it. Days are warm but not heavy, with plenty of sun and only a few short showers. February and March are the driest, with rain on just four days each month. The trade winds keep evenings pleasant, so a dinner on the harbour in Gustavia feels easy rather than sticky.
It's also high season. Christmas and New Year are the peak, when superyachts fill the harbour and the island is at its most glamorous and most expensive. Rooms and rental cars go early. St Barth's New Year fireworks over the port are a big draw. If you want good weather without the holiday crush, aim for late January to March, or April after Easter.
Beaches are at their best now. Shell Beach, right by town, and Colombier, reached by a short walk or by boat, are calm and clear. Hikers get the best conditions on the Colombier trail, which can be muddy and hot later in the year.
May to July: quieter and still warm
Showers become more frequent from May, but they tend to be quick. You'll get a downpour, then sun again. It's warmer, and the sea feels like a bath. Many visitors leave, so beaches like Saline and Grand Cul-de-Sac feel roomy.
Some restaurants and villas close for a break in this period, so check your favourites. In return, you'll find lower rates and an easy pace. Gustavia hosts the Bucket Regatta in March, so that's one to skip if you're here now. For a summer highlight, look to the St Barth Fête du Port in August or the island's Bastille Day celebrations on 14 July, which reflect its French roots.
August to November: wet and hurricane-prone
August to October is the wettest stretch. October is the wettest month by far, with 116 mm over 15 days. It's also the heart of hurricane season, so travel insurance matters and flexible bookings are wise. Many hotels and restaurants shut for several weeks, often into October.
If you can handle grey days and want the lowest prices and the emptiest island, early September can work. November is better. Rain eases, the sea is still warm, and places start reopening before the holiday rush. It's a good pick if you like quiet walks around Lorient and want to beat the December crowds.
