When to go to Novosibirsk: a seasonal guide
Summer: the easy season
June to August is when Novosibirsk is at its best. Days are warm, not hot, and evenings stay mild. July is the warmest month, with highs around 24°C. It's also the wettest, with rain on 16 days, so expect short showers rather than grey weeks. June and August are the calmer picks, with rain on 12 days each.
This is the time for walking along the Ob River embankment and taking a dip at the city beaches by the water. Day trips to Akademgorodok, the science town south of the centre, are pleasant too. Its birch and pine woods are close to the Ob Sea, a big reservoir where locals sail and swim. Mosquitoes can be a nuisance near water at dusk, so a repellent is worth having for the forest walks.
Spring and autumn: short and changeable
May is a surprise. It rates Excellent, with highs of 15°C and long light evenings. Parks turn green quickly, and it's a good month for city strolls without summer showers. April is Fair, with slush and thawing paths, so it's more of a shoulder month than a real spring.
September is Good, with highs of 15°C and golden birch leaves in Akademgorodok. By October things turn grey. Sun drops to under three hours a day, and the rating falls to Poor. Pick September over October if you can.
Winter: for people who like real cold
From November to March, you're in deep Siberian winter. January is the coldest month, with highs of -16°C and lows of -24°C. Skies are often overcast, and humidity stays very high. Is that for you? If you like crisp, snowy streets, it can be great. If not, skip it.
Winter does have its own pull. The city puts up ice sculptures and a big tree around Lenin Square for New Year, and the Russian holidays in early January bring local families out. Warm indoor stops matter here. The Opera and Ballet Theatre, one of Russia's largest, is an easy way to spend a freezing evening. The Railway Museum is another.
Crowds are never a big issue. Novosibirsk is a business and transit city, not a tourist hotspot, so there's no real high season. Summer is busiest, but mainly with locals. Winter is the quietest time to visit.
