October feels raw

October in Novosibirsk is a cold, damp month, with afternoons around 6°C and nights near freezing. Rain falls on many days, and heavy cloud leaves little sunshine. The city's parks can feel muddy, while the Ob embankment is chilly and exposed.

You can still enjoy indoor sights, including the Novosibirsk State Art Museum and the Opera and Ballet Theatre. Short walks around Lenin Square work between showers. Save long riverside strolls and beach time for warmer months; October's weather makes them uninviting.

Culture, not festivals

There isn't a major citywide October festival to plan a trip around. Russia's National Unity Day is on November 4, just outside the month. Instead, October is a good time to catch a performance at the Opera and Ballet Theatre or a concert at the Novosibirsk Philharmonic, as the indoor cultural season gets going.

If you hate crowds, October is quieter than the summer holiday period. You'll likely find fewer visitors at central sights, and accommodation demand is generally lower than in peak summer. Prices vary, though, so don't count on every hotel being a bargain.

Make the most of a grey day

Travelling with kids? Novosibirsk Zoo can still work on a dry day, but the cold and wet may make a full visit tiring. Pair it with a warm indoor stop rather than spending the whole day outside.

For an easy local outing, take the metro to Ploshchad Lenina and visit the theatre or nearby museum. Keep your plans flexible: with frequent rain and short daylight, a sheltered city day is often more pleasant than a long trip to the river. In the evening, try Siberian pelmeni, dumplings that make a cosy meal after a chilly walk.
