Visiting New Territories in April
April feels warm and damp
April brings mild-to-warm days, but the air can feel sticky, especially when you're walking around Sha Tin or the walled villages of Kam Tin. Rain falls on about 13 days, and cloud often softens the sunshine. You can still enjoy outdoor visits, but a sudden shower may interrupt a long hike or a day at a beach.
The riverside paths in Sha Tin and heritage streets in Tai Po work well between showers. For a clear view from Tai Mo Shan, don't count on it: cloud and rain can hide the summit. May is much wetter, so April can suit you if you want to explore before the heavier rains arrive.
Ching Ming and holiday crowds
Ching Ming Festival falls in April or early April, depending on the year. Families visit ancestral graves, so cemeteries and nearby roads can be busy on the holiday. Easter can also bring more visitors when it falls in April.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling through popular cemetery areas on Ching Ming itself. April is less reliably busy than the October-to-February high season, though holiday dates can lift demand and prices. Compared with May, you'll get less rain, but the weather is already humid.
Make the most of a local day
Travelling with kids? Keep an indoor stop in reserve for a wet afternoon, such as the Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin, then take a walk along the Shing Mun River if the rain clears.
For Tai Mo Shan, use the bus route from Tsuen Wan and check conditions before setting out. The exposed summit can feel very different from town when mist rolls in. If the view disappears, the lower trails still offer a good walk among the hills.
