Visiting Nanchang in March
March feels damp
March is mild, but it rarely feels reliably springlike. Days reach about 18°C, while evenings can feel chilly at around 8°C. Rain falls often, and grey skies are common, so the city can feel cool and damp rather than sunny.
You can still enjoy Tengwang Pavilion, the Nanchang Uprising Memorial Hall and a stroll around Bayi Square. Leave flexible time for outdoor plans, though: steady rain can make riverside walks less pleasant, and cloudy days dull the views from the pavilion. April is warmer, but wetter too.
Events and crowds
March has no major fixed public holiday in Nanchang. Qingming, the tomb-sweeping holiday, usually falls in early April, though its date changes. You're more likely to find ordinary school-term routines than a festival crowd.
If you hate crowds, March is generally calmer than October, one of Nanchang's busiest travel months. Hotels and trains can feel less pressured than during the October National Day holiday, but prices vary, so don't count on every stay being a bargain. You'll also miss the bigger holiday rush around Chinese New Year, which usually falls earlier.
Make rain work for you
Plan a mix of indoor stops and short outdoor visits. On a wet afternoon, the Nanchang Uprising Memorial Hall gives you a worthwhile break from the drizzle; save Bayi Square or the riverside for a clearer spell. Travelling with kids? Keep the day loose, since repeated showers can make long walks tiring.
For Tengwang Pavilion, take Metro Line 1 to Tengwangge station rather than making a long walk through the rain. The pavilion is near the river, and a dry spell makes its views over the Gan River much more rewarding. A warm bowl of Nanchang rice noodles is a welcome stop after a damp outing.
