June: fierce summer heat

June feels hot and dry in Mosul. Afternoon highs reach 41°C, while nights stay warm at 24°C. Rain is rare, and the long sunny days can make walking around the Old City tiring. Save outdoor sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day, then take a longer break indoors through the hottest hours.

The Great Mosque of al-Nuri and its leaning minaret are worth seeing, but check that restoration work allows visitors in. Don't plan a long walk along the Tigris at midday. June isn't a good month for strenuous outings in the open sun; March and April are much more comfortable.

Events and local days

Mosul has no major fixed festival that reliably takes place in June. Eid al-Adha can fall in June in some years, but its date follows the Islamic lunar calendar and shifts from year to year. If it coincides with your visit, expect changed opening hours and a quieter pace around some services.

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor visits short, and choose a shaded stop in the Old City rather than a long midday walk.

Fewer visitors, with a local tip

June is low season compared with the milder months of March, April and November. You'll generally find fewer sightseeing visitors, and accommodation may cost less than in peak months, though prices vary. The heat is the trade-off, not a lack of daylight.

For a practical stop, look for Mosul's masgouf, a local grilled fish dish often cooked over an open fire. Ask about it at a restaurant near the Tigris, and make that meal your evening outing. You'll enjoy the river setting when the day's worst heat has eased.
