September: warm and damp

September in Meishan feels warm, muggy and often grey. The high reaches 28°C, but rain falls on 22 days, with 160 mm across the month. Cloudy skies and little daily sunshine can make outdoor plans feel soggy, even when it isn't raining.

You can still visit Sansu Temple, the family home and memorial to poet Su Shi. Its courtyards and covered areas give you places to pause between showers. A long countryside walk is less appealing; trails can be muddy, and wet weather may spoil views. Save flexible indoor time for rainy afternoons.

Festivals and crowds

Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September, though its date changes each year. Expect more local visitors around the holiday, especially at Sansu Temple and popular restaurants. National Day begins in October, so the busiest holiday travel period is usually just after September ends.

If you hate crowds, September is generally quieter than the summer holiday months of July and August. Prices are often less pressured than in peak summer, though the Mid-Autumn break can bring a short jump in demand. March and November are better months overall for comfortable sightseeing.

Make a rainy day work

Travelling with kids? Keep the day flexible: a sudden shower can interrupt a park visit, while a meal indoors is an easy change of plan.

Try Dongpo pork, the rich braised dish named for Su Shi, at a restaurant near Sansu Temple. Then visit the temple when the rain eases. Its connection to Meishan's best-known poet makes it a useful stop even on a cloudy day. October is drier, so consider shifting a trip focused on long outdoor walks to then.
