Mashhad feels properly wintry in December. Afternoons reach about 11°C, while nights can fall to 0°C, so the chill is sharp once the sun goes down. Rain is limited to around two days, leaving plenty of dry time for the Imam Reza Shrine, the bazaar and museums. Short daylight means there's less time for long outings.

If you hate crowds, December can feel calmer than spring and the busy summer pilgrimage season. The shrine still draws visitors throughout the year, though, and prices can vary with religious holidays and local demand. You may find better value than during peak travel periods, but don't count on the city being quiet.

What to do

Use the sunnier part of the day for walking around the shrine complex or visiting the tomb of Ferdowsi in Tus. Save indoor sights and a warming bowl of sholeh Mashhadi, a local meat-and-bean stew, for colder hours. Skip long outdoor trips after dark, when temperatures drop quickly.

Travelling with kids? Keep visits to the shrine flexible; its large courtyards can mean plenty of walking in the cold.

Yalda Night falls around the winter solstice. Families gather for fruit, nuts and poetry, so you may notice seasonal foods and a festive feel, though it isn't a citywide street festival.

At the Imam Reza Shrine, follow the dress rules: women need a chador, a full-body cloak. If you don't have one, ask at the entrance about borrowing one. Check the lunar calendar before your trip, too; religious observances can shift the mood and visitor numbers.
