April days outdoors

April feels mild and fresh in Mashhad, with warm afternoons and cool evenings. Highs reach 23°C, while nights can fall to 9°C. Rain comes on some days, so a shower may interrupt a walk, but it rarely defines the whole visit.

You'll have comfortable weather for exploring the Imam Reza shrine complex, wandering the old streets near it, or taking a day trip to Tus and Ferdowsi's tomb. The spring light also suits a stroll through Kooh Sangi Park. Save long outdoor plans for a dry spell, and don't count on a full beach-style day: Mashhad is inland.

Nowruz and the crowds

The first days of April can overlap with the end of Nowruz, Iran's New Year holiday. Sizdah Bedar, the traditional outdoor picnic day near the holiday's end, brings families to parks such as Kooh Sangi. If your visit overlaps, expect more domestic travellers and busy roads.

Early April lodging and transport can cost more than in quieter months, especially around Nowruz. After the holiday rush, the city usually feels easier to navigate. If you hate crowds, aim for later in April, when the holiday travel has eased.

Make shrine visits easier

April is one of Mashhad's best months overall, alongside May and October. It's much more comfortable for sightseeing than the hotter days of May, though evenings still feel cool. The month gets more rain than May, so keep a flexible plan for outdoor stops.

At the Imam Reza shrine, dress modestly; women need a chador, a full-body covering. If you don't have one, ask at the entrance about borrowing one. This makes entry simpler and lets you focus on the courtyards and gilded dome.
