Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

March to May is when Mashhad feels easiest. Days warm up from cool in March to pleasantly hot by May. March is the wettest month in the data, so expect some grey days. April and May are drier and brighter. Parks fill with picnickers, and walking around the Imam Reza shrine complex, the city's heart, is a pleasure in the afternoon.

Autumn works just as well. September is still warm and very dry, and October cools to mild days and crisp evenings. November is cooler again, with fewer tourists in the courtyards. Do you like long walks between sights? Pick September to November.

Summer and winter: the hard months

June to August is hot, dry and sunny, with almost no rain. July is the hottest month, and the data rates it only Fair. Midday on the shrine's open marble courtyards can feel fierce, so do your sightseeing after sunset. Many pilgrims visit then, and the shrine glows and stays busy late into the night. Day trips to Kang village or the Torqabeh area, in the hills outside town, are cooler and greener than the city.

Winter is cold. January is the coldest month, with nights below freezing. January and February also bring snow risk, and the air can feel damp. The upside is quiet streets and warm tea houses. Try a bowl of dizi, a lamb and chickpea stew, to warm up.

Crowds and events

Mashhad is Iran's main pilgrimage city, so crowds follow religious dates more than the weather. Nowruz, the Persian New Year around the spring equinox in March, is the busiest time. Iranian families travel, and hotels fill. The Islamic calendar shifts about eleven days earlier each year, so dates for Ramadan and for mourning and holy days, like Muharram and the anniversary of Imam Reza's death, move through the seasons. Check them before you book, because shops and restaurants may close or change hours.

If you want quieter days, aim for late April, May or October. Travelling with kids? Late spring is a good bet, with mild days and fewer religious crowds than Nowruz.
