Best Time to Visit Karaj

Spring and early autumn are the sweet spots

April and May are the best months to come. Days are mild, with highs from 19°C to 25°C, and evenings stay cool enough for a jacket. Rain falls on fewer days as May goes on. September is just as good, with warm, dry-feeling days and chilly nights.

Karaj sits at the foot of the Alborz mountains, so spring is the time for walking. Head up toward the Amirkabir Dam lake or the Chalus Road valleys while the hillsides are green. Many people from Tehran, about an hour away, flock here on Fridays. That's the weekend in Iran, so expect traffic on the roads out of town.

Summer: hot days, easy escapes

June to August is dry and sunny. July is the hottest month, with a high of 34°C and nights around 22°C. The air is dry, so the heat feels sharp rather than sticky. Afternoons in the city are best spent indoors or in the shade of Jamshidieh-style parks and tree-lined streets.

If you don't mind the heat, summer suits road trips. Higher villages and the mountain roads toward Chalus feel noticeably cooler. Travelling with kids? School is out, so family spots and picnic areas fill up, especially on Fridays.

Autumn and winter: rain, snow and quiet

October is still rated Excellent, with highs around 22°C and golden leaves. But it's also one of the wettest months, with 86 mm. November is wetter still at 88 mm, and it's the first month that feels properly grey and chilly. Bring a proper rain jacket.

Winter is cold, with January and February lows below freezing. It's the quietest time for sightseeing, but good if you want to combine Karaj with skiing in the nearby mountains. Dizin and Shemshak resorts are reachable from the region, though snow roads can be slow.

Festivals and timing

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, falls around the March equinox. It's the biggest holiday of the year. Many shops close for the first days, and families travel widely, so book rooms early if you come then. March itself is still cool, so expect a fresh, changeable feel. If you want quiet streets and fewer visitors, aim for late April or September instead.
