Winter and early spring: the comfortable stretch

From November to April, Sadr City is at its easiest. November and March both reach about 25°C by day, which is good for walking the busy streets and markets. December to February is cooler, with chilly nights. Rain falls on a handful of days a month, and a wet street can turn muddy and slow traffic. Still, the sun usually comes back quickly.

Summer: hot, dry and hard work

From June to September, daytime highs sit between 42°C and 46°C. July and August tie as the hottest months, both at 46°C by day and 29°C at night. There's no rain at all in June, July or August. The air is very dry, and the sun shines for 12 to 13 hours a day.

Honestly, this isn't sightseeing weather. Most people stay indoors from late morning until the evening. Power cuts are common in Baghdad in summer, which makes the heat harder to escape. If you must come, plan your outings for after sunset.

May and October are the in-between months. May is already rated Poor at 38°C. October is Fair, with cooler evenings and little rain.

Crowds, festivals and timing

Sadr City isn't a classic tourist stop, so there's no tourist high season. Busy times follow the religious calendar instead. Ramadan, the fasting month, changes the rhythm of the day. Shops open late, and streets come alive after sunset. Its dates move earlier each year, so check them before you book.

Ashura is a major Shia observance, and Arbaeen follows about forty days later. Both fill Baghdad and the roads toward Karbala with huge numbers of people. Expect checkpoints, closed roads and slow travel. If you want a quiet trip, avoid those dates. If you want to understand local life, they're powerful, but you should go with a trusted local guide.
