Winter and early spring: the comfortable stretch
From November to April, Karbala is at its best for walking. November days are mild at around 23°C. By January it's cool, with highs of 16°C and nights that get properly cold, so you'll want a jacket in the evening. February and March are the sweet spot. Days are pleasant, the air is fairly dry, and you can spend hours outdoors around the shrines of Imam Hussein and Abbas, and along the walkway between them.
Rain does come, but it's light. Expect a few showery days a month, not weeks of grey. A wet day can turn the dusty streets muddy, so wear shoes you don't mind cleaning.
Summer: very hot, very quiet outdoors
June to September is harsh. July and August are tied as the hottest months, with highs of 44°C and no rain at all. Midday outdoors is hard work, even for a short walk to the shrine courtyards. The shrines themselves are used to this, with shaded halls and cooled spaces, but you'll still want to be inside from late morning to late afternoon.
If you must come, go in the evening, after the sun drops. Locals do the same. May and September are shoulder months, still hot but easier than the peak. October is a good middle ground, with highs around 33°C.
Pilgrim seasons and crowds
Karbala's crowds follow the Islamic calendar, not the weather. The two big moments are Ashura, on the 10th of Muharram, and Arbaeen, 40 days later. Arbaeen draws one of the largest gatherings on Earth, with millions of pilgrims, many walking for days from Najaf. Because the Islamic calendar moves about 11 days earlier each year, these events slide through the seasons. Check the dates for your year, as they can fall in the heat of summer or in cooler months.
If you want a quiet visit with room to move, avoid both. Hotels fill, roads close around the shrines, and the city is stretched. Travelling with kids or you dislike crowds? Pick February or March instead. If you're coming for the pilgrimage itself, know that the weather may be hot, and plan around it.
Other busy times include the birthdays and mourning anniversaries of the Imams, when local visitors surge in. They're smaller than Arbaeen but still noticeable. Visitors should dress modestly year-round, in line with the shrines' rules.
