Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April and May are the best months by our comfort score, and October joins them. June and September also rate Excellent, so you have a wide window. In April the days are mild at 18°C, but nights are still cold and it rains on about nine days. May is warmer and softer, and it's a good time to walk the Tabriz Bazaar, the huge brick-roofed market that's a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wet days suit it well, because most of it is covered.
October is calmer and golden. Days are comfortable and rain is light. It's a good month for El Goli (Shahgoli), the park with a pond and pavilion, and for day trips to Kandovan, the village of rock-cut homes.
Summer and winter: the extremes
Summer here is dry and sunny, not sticky. July and August are the hottest, tied at 35°C, with almost no rain. Afternoons are strong, but nights drop to 18°C, so evenings are pleasant. Both months rate only Fair. June is the better pick if you want long days without the peak heat. If you hate crowds, know that Iranian school holidays bring more domestic visitors in summer, especially to Kandovan and Lake Urmia's region.
Winter is cold and grey. January is the coldest, with lows of -4°C, and the sun shows up only about three and a half hours a day. Snow is common. Your sightseeing is mostly indoors: the Azerbaijan Museum, the Blue Mosque and the bazaar's tea houses. You'll often have them to yourself. Try a bowl of hot abgoosht, a lamb and chickpea stew, to warm up.
Events and timing
Nowruz, the Persian New Year, falls around the spring equinox in March. Many Iranians travel, shops can close for a few days, and hotels fill up. March itself is still chilly, with a low of 1°C. If you visit then, expect crowds at popular sights and some closed businesses.
Muharram and Ramadan move earlier each year, since they follow the lunar calendar. During Ramadan, many restaurants close in daytime. Tabriz's Ashura processions are among the most notable in Iran, but they're solemn religious events, so be respectful. Check the dates for your year.
For most trips, aim for May or late September. You'll get warm days, cool nights and room to wander.
