Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
March and April are the best months for most trips. Days are mild, the Kopet Dag mountains behind the city still hold some freshness, and the white marble streets feel pleasant to walk. March is one of the wetter months, so expect a few grey, damp days. By April it's warmer and drier. May is still rated Excellent, but afternoons climb to 30°C, so save outdoor sightseeing for the morning.
Autumn is just as good. September stays warm and almost rain-free, and October is a gentle 24°C by day. If you want to wander the Russian Bazaar, the Tolkuchka Bazaar on the edge of town (open mainly on weekends) or the monuments around Independence Park, October is hard to beat. November is cooler and still rated Excellent, with more clouds.
Summer: hot and dry
June to August is Fair, and it's mostly down to heat. July peaks at 37°C, and the sun shines for over 11 hours a day. The air is dry, so it's more of an oven than a sauna. Afternoons are tough for walking around.
Do what locals do. Go out early, rest in the middle of the day, and come back out in the evening when the fountains and lit-up buildings are at their best. Summer is also the best time to use Ashgabat as a base for the Karakum Desert and the Darvaza gas crater, though nights out there are not much cooler than the city. Rain is almost nonexistent, so you can plan with confidence.
Winter, crowds and events
Winter is cool rather than harsh. December to February days sit around 11–13°C, and nights hover near freezing. It's rated Good, with short, often cloudy days. Museums and the big indoor spots, like the National Museum of History, make good plans. Ashgabat is also the sort of city where winter means quiet streets and little queueing.
Turkmenistan isn't a mass-tourism country, and visas and tours shape travel more than seasons do. Spring and autumn are the busiest times for visitors, but you won't see big crowds. The spring festival of Nowruz, around 21 March, is a highlight, with music, food and traditional games. Late May brings Day of Revival and Unity celebrations. Melon Day, held in August, is a sweet reason to visit during the hot season. Check dates before you fix your plans, since the calendar can shift.
