May: hot and damp

May feels sticky from morning onwards, with highs around 33°C and warm nights. Rain falls on many days, but showers can still interrupt a walk through Intramuros or a visit to Rizal Park. The month gets more rain than April, though June is wetter still.

The National Museum's galleries make a good midday escape from the heat. Save outdoor sights for when the air feels cooler, and don't count on a full beach day: Manila Bay isn't a swimming beach. If you hate crowds, May can suit you better than the cooler January and February peak.

May events and crowds

Flores de Mayo, a month-long Catholic devotion to the Virgin Mary, takes place in churches around Manila. Santacruzan processions often close the month, with participants in formal dress; dates and routes vary by parish, so local announcements matter.

May is usually quieter than the popular cool-season months, and accommodation can be less costly. But local school holidays can bring families to malls and attractions. Expect hot, busy indoor spaces when rain drives people inside.

Make your day easier

Travelling with kids? Build in an indoor break before everyone gets worn out by the heat. The National Museum of Fine Arts, near Rizal Park, is a useful stop between outdoor visits; check its opening days before you go.

For Intramuros, the LRT-1 Central Terminal is close to the walled city, but the final walk can feel punishing in the afternoon humidity. Take a taxi or ride-hailing car for that short stretch, especially if rain has started. If you're there during Santacruzan, ask your hotel which streets will close before setting out.
