April: hot days

April feels like a tough month for sightseeing in Kolkata. Highs reach 39°C, and even nights stay warm, with lows around 25°C. The heat can make a long walk through the Maidan or around Victoria Memorial tiring, especially in the afternoon.

Try indoor stops such as the Indian Museum, or keep outdoor visits short and focus on one area at a time. Rain falls on some days, but it won't reliably cool things down. May is wetter, while March is cooler and drier.

New Year celebrations

Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, falls in mid-April. You'll find festive meals and cultural events around the city. Bengali restaurants may serve special menus, and shops can be busy with people buying new clothes and gifts.

If you hate crowds, avoid the busiest shopping streets around the holiday. The celebrations are a lovely way to see local traditions, but April isn't a month for leisurely outdoor festivals in the midday heat.

Quieter, but uncomfortable

April is outside Kolkata's main cool-season travel period, so you'll usually find fewer visitors than in December and January. Hotels may cost less than during those popular months, though prices vary. The trade-off is clear: poor comfort for long days outside.

Travelling with kids? Keep afternoons for indoor sights or a rest. For a practical local stop, take the Metro to Esplanade and visit the Indian Museum nearby; you can avoid a long, hot walk through central Kolkata. In the evening, try a Bengali meal in Park Street, when the city feels easier to explore.
