April's heat and rain

April in Dhaka feels hot and sticky, with daytime highs reaching 36°C and nights staying warm. Rain falls on about 14 days, often in sharp showers, so a dry morning can turn wet later. The weather is less comfortable than March, and May brings even more rain.

Keep outdoor sightseeing short, and save indoor stops for the hottest part of the day. The National Museum in Shahbagh is a useful break from the heat. Avoid long walks around Lalbagh Fort at midday; damp paths can also make exploring harder after rain.

New Year celebrations

Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year, falls on April 14. Around Dhaka University, the Mangal Shobhajatra procession draws crowds in colourful masks and costumes. Ramna Batamul is another well-known place for New Year music and celebrations.

If you hate crowds, steer clear of the procession route and Ramna on the day itself. Streets can be busy, and getting across central Dhaka may take longer than usual.

Crowds and costs

April is generally quieter than the cool-season peak from December to February, so you may find better hotel rates away from New Year. Expect a short-lived rise in demand around Pohela Boishakh, especially near central celebration spots.

Travelling with kids? Keep trips around Shahbagh brief, and take a break indoors when the afternoon heat builds. For a practical local tip, use a rickshaw for the short ride between the National Museum and Ramna Park rather than walking in the midday heat. After rain, allow extra time for traffic around Shahbagh.
