January is one of Kolkata's easiest months for sightseeing. Afternoons feel mild, while mornings and evenings can be cool, especially beside the Hooghly. Rain is rare, and you'll often get plenty of sun.

The weather suits long walks around Victoria Memorial and the Maidan, or a tram ride through central Kolkata. It's also comfortable for exploring Kumartuli's lanes and stopping for tea. Don't expect a hot-weather break, though: evenings can feel chilly, and January isn't the month for beach plans.

Events and winter treats

Makar Sankranti brings the Gangasagar Mela, when pilgrims travel from Kolkata towards Sagar Island. The Kolkata Book Fair often begins in late January, but its dates shift from year to year. Republic Day, on 26 January, brings a parade along Red Road.

Winter is a good time to try sweets made with nolen gur, a fragrant date palm jaggery. You'll find it in treats such as sandesh at Kolkata sweet shops.

Travelling with kids? Victoria Memorial's gardens and the Maidan make a relaxed outing in the cooler part of the day.

Crowds and local tips

December and January are Kolkata's best-weather months, so popular sights and hotels can feel busier than during the hot, rainy season. Prices may be higher than in the monsoon months, especially around major events. If you hate crowds, visit Victoria Memorial on a weekday.

For an easy evening stop, take the Metro to Esplanade and walk to the Maidan. The wide open space feels especially pleasant in January's cool air. If you're heading to the Book Fair, check which venue it's using that year; it has moved between sites.
