January weather in Hue

January feels mild, damp and often grey. The high is around 24°C, but humidity is high and rain falls on many days. You may get a dry stretch, but don't count on clear skies.

The Imperial Citadel and Khai Dinh Tomb still work well for sightseeing between showers. Cloudy weather can make long walks more comfortable than in Hue's hotter months. Skip plans that depend on a sunny boat ride along the Perfume River, or keep them flexible. December is much wetter; February is drier, so January sits between the two.

What's on, and how busy it gets

New Year's Day is a public holiday in Vietnam. Tet, the Lunar New Year, sometimes falls in January and sometimes in February. When it does, travel can get busier and some shops and restaurants may close for part of the holiday.

Outside Tet, January is generally quieter than the spring months, with fewer visitors at the Citadel and tombs. Prices are often lower than in the busier season, though Tet can change that. Families who prefer calm visits may find the quieter days easier, but should check whether Tet overlaps their trip.

Make rainy days work

Rain won't stop you eating well: try bun bo Hue, the city's spicy beef noodle soup, at a local restaurant. Keep a flexible sightseeing plan, so a shower can turn into a long lunch rather than a wasted afternoon.

For a practical rainy-day route, visit the covered halls and courtyards inside the Imperial Citadel, then take a taxi to Dong Ba Market for a sheltered browse. The market can be crowded, but it's a useful place to sample local snacks without relying on a sunny day. If you're visiting during Tet, expect some stalls to be closed.
