Best Time to Visit Hue

March to April: the sweet spot

March is the best month here, and January to March is the best stretch overall. Days reach about 28°C in March, the air feels softer, and rain falls on only 8 days. That makes it good for the things Hue is known for: cycling or walking around the Imperial City, and a boat ride on the Perfume River to Thien Mu Pagoda. The royal tombs, like Khai Dinh and Minh Mang, are spread out, so dry roads help.

January is cooler and greyer. It rains on 14 days and the sun is weak, so it's fine for museums and long bowls of bun bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), but not great for photos. February is a good middle ground.

By April it's warming up. It's still pleasant for sightseeing, though the afternoons get sticky.

May to August: hot and mostly dry-ish

Summer is hot, with highs around 32 to 33°C. June is the hottest month, but July and August are tied with May at 32°C, so the heat is steady. Showers are common, especially in July and August.

This is when Vietnamese families are on school holiday, and many head to the nearby beaches at Lang Co and Thuan An. If you want sand and don't mind heat, it works. Spend the middle of the day inside the shady corridors of the Citadel or a tomb pavilion, then go out again near sunset.

Festival fans should look at Hue Festival. It's a big arts event with performances in and around the Imperial City. It has usually been held in alternating years, so check whether a year has one before you plan around it.

September to December: the wet months

This is the rainy season, and it's serious. October is the wettest month, with 677 mm over 25 days. September and November are nearly as soaked. Typhoons are possible, and the Perfume River can rise. Streets in the old town can flood, and some trips get cancelled.

December is cooler, at 24°C, but it's still wet on 20 days and has the least sun of the year, at 2.1 hours a day. It's gloomy rather than stormy.

The upside is low season. Hotels are quieter and you'll have the tombs to yourself. If you come, keep your plans loose and pack a proper rain jacket for walking inside the Citadel. Skip the Hai Van Pass motorbike ride, since mist and slick roads make it a poor idea.

Tet, the Lunar New Year, falls in late January or February. Many shops close for a few days, but the city feels festive, with flowers and family gatherings.
