Visiting Hoi An in January
January weather in Hoi An
January feels mild, humid and often cloudy. The sea air can make walks through the Ancient Town feel sticky, while rain may interrupt your plans. Showers fall on many days, though December is much wetter. February is usually a drier bet.
You can still enjoy the lantern-lit lanes, the Japanese Covered Bridge and a bowl of cao lầu, Hoi An's local pork-and-noodle dish. Leave room to duck into cafés when rain sets in. Beach time at An Bang is possible, but January's clouds and showers make it less reliable. Don't build your whole visit around sunbathing or a long beach day.
Events and crowds
Hoi An's monthly full-moon lantern night brings extra atmosphere to the Ancient Town, with lanterns lighting the streets and river. Its date follows the lunar calendar, so check whether it falls during your stay. Tet, Vietnam's Lunar New Year, can also fall in January, but its date changes each year. Around Tet, some businesses close and travel gets busier.
If you hate crowds, avoid the Old Town around lantern night and Tet. January is busier and often pricier than the wettest months, but it's not as reliably sunny as February and March, two of Hoi An's best-weather months.
Tips for Hoi An in January
Use a rainy spell to explore the covered market or take a cooking class in Cam Thanh, where basket boats move through coconut palms. For a calmer walk, cross the Thu Bon River to Cam Nam and watch the light change over the Old Town.
Travelling with kids? Keep the Japanese Covered Bridge as a short stop, not a shelter plan; it's a famous sight, but space is limited when the lanes are crowded. If heavy rain leaves the riverfront streets wet, ask locally about access before heading down to the water.
