Visiting Hoi An in September
September weather
September is hot, sticky and very wet in Hoi An. Highs reach 31°C, humidity sits at 83%, and rain falls on 22 days, often in heavy bursts that can cut short your walks through the Old Town. Rain is the main reason this month scores so low, so plan around it.
Even so, you can still enjoy the Japanese Covered Bridge, the museums and the cafés between downpours. Long beach days at An Bang and countryside cycling are less reliable. The river can rise after heavy rain, so don't assume every lane will stay dry. If you're flexible, know that October is wetter still, and February and March are much better for settled weather.
Festivals and holidays
The Full Moon Lantern Festival is one of Hoi An's highlights. Lanterns light up the Old Town, and traffic restrictions make the centre feel especially atmospheric. Because the date follows the lunar calendar, it may fall in September or in another month, so check before you book.
Vietnam's National Day on September 2 can bring more domestic visitors and a busier feel around popular sights. If you hate crowds, avoid the holiday period, especially if you're also hoping to see the lanterns.
Crowds and practical tips
September is part of Hoi An's rainy season, not its peak beach season. You'll generally find fewer visitors than in the drier months, and accommodation prices can be lower. National Day and the lantern festival are the exceptions, when the Old Town may feel packed.
For a wet afternoon, duck into the Museum of Folk Culture on Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, then try cao lầu, Hoi An's chewy pork-and-noodle dish, at a nearby restaurant. If rain is falling hard, ask your hotel about water levels before you head to the riverfront. A short walk can turn awkward when low streets flood.
