Visiting Houston in July
July: heat and storms
Houston feels hot, sticky and often showery in July. Afternoon highs reach 35°C, and the humidity can make walking around feel tiring. Rain falls on many days, often in heavy bursts, so outdoor plans may need to bend around a passing storm.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Downtown Aquarium and the Galleria are good indoor breaks. For outdoor time, try Buffalo Bayou Park when it's cooler, but skip long exposed walks in the middle of the day. Galveston's beaches are an option, though Houston's July weather can bring rough, stormy spells.
July 4 and summer crowds
Houston celebrates Independence Day with Freedom Over Texas, a festival and fireworks show at Eleanor Tinsley Park. Expect busy roads and crowds near the event, especially around the holiday.
Travelling with kids? The Children's Museum Houston is a useful rainy-day stop, but it can be busy during school holidays. July is generally quieter for tourism than Houston's spring and autumn peak periods, and hotel prices can be lower. Prices may rise around July 4, so compare dates before settling on a stay.
Make the heat work for you
Plan a mix of indoor sights and short outdoor visits. The city's air-conditioned Downtown Tunnels can help you get between some offices, shops and food spots without walking above ground. They're mainly useful on weekdays, when many entrances are open; don't count on them as an evening or weekend shortcut.
For dinner, try a bowl of gumbo or Vietnamese food in Midtown. Houston's food scene gives you an easy way to spend a stormy evening indoors. If you're set on seeing the Museum District, leave the walk between museums for a cooler part of the day.
