Houston's January days are mild, but evenings can feel chilly, especially after rain. Expect highs around 17°C and lows near 5°C, with rain on several days and plenty of cloud. It's cooler and wetter than December, though February is usually drier.

You can still explore the Museum District, browse the Menil Collection or walk Buffalo Bayou Park between showers. Wet paths and grey skies make long outdoor plans less reliable, so keep a museum or meal in Montrose as a backup. The beaches aren't close enough for an easy day trip, and January isn't ideal for a beach-focused visit.

Events and crowds

The Chevron Houston Marathon brings runners and spectators into the city in January. Martin Luther King Jr. Day also brings local events, including Houston's annual MLK Grande Parade. These can make central areas busier, so expect road closures around event routes.

If you hate crowds, visit the Museum District on a non-event day and enjoy a quieter feel than during Houston's spring busy season. After the winter holidays, visitor demand is generally lower, and hotel prices can be easier than during major events or spring break. Marathon weekend is the exception: check where your hotel sits in relation to the route.

Houston's weather can change within the day, so keep your plans flexible rather than committing every hour to outdoor sightseeing.
