Houston's February days are mild, but evenings can feel chilly. Expect changeable skies, sticky air and some rain, rather than reliable winter sunshine. Showers fall on about seven days, so a wet spell can interrupt plans.

It's a good month for the Museum District, the Houston Museum of Natural Science and indoor time at Space Center Houston. On a dry day, walk Hermann Park or explore the murals and cafés in Montrose. Beaches aren't a sensible day trip: the Gulf is cool, and the weather can turn damp. If you're planning a long walk, keep an indoor stop in mind.

Events and crowds

Valentine's Day brings a little extra restaurant demand, while Presidents' Day weekend can make family attractions busier. Houston's Livestock Show and Rodeo sometimes begins in late February, though its dates shift. When it does, expect crowds around NRG Park and more visitors in town.

If you hate crowds, visit the Museum District on a weekday and avoid NRG Park during rodeo events.

February is generally calmer than spring break and the busy summer travel season. You may find better hotel value than during major rodeo dates, but prices vary with events and demand.

A local tip

Houston's spread-out sights make driving useful, but don't assume every trip is quick. For the Museum District, use METRORail's Red Line to reach Museum District Station, then walk into Hermann Park or nearby museums. Rain can make the walk less pleasant, so check conditions before setting out.

For a warm local meal, try a bowl of Vietnamese pho in Houston's Chinatown, along Bellaire Boulevard. It suits a cool, damp evening far better than squeezing in another outdoor stop.
