Ho Chi Minh City Weather in January

Warm, mostly dry days

January is one of the best months to explore Ho Chi Minh City. Afternoons reach 32°C, but evenings cool to around 21°C. Rain is rare, so you can wander District 1, visit the War Remnants Museum or eat outdoors without often dodging a shower.

The heat still builds during the day. Save a long walk around the Reunification Palace and nearby streets for morning or late afternoon. January is drier than December, and far less sticky than the wetter months.

Tet may arrive

Tet, Vietnam's Lunar New Year, sometimes falls in January, though its date changes each year. In the days before it, Nguyen Hue Flower Street and Tao Dan Park's flower displays bring festive colour to the city.

During Tet itself, many family-run shops and restaurants close, while locals travel to see relatives. If you're hoping for a specific meal or shop, don't assume it'll be open during the holiday.

Crowds and costs

January is a popular time to visit, so you'll share central sights with plenty of other travellers. Prices can rise around Tet, especially as Vietnamese families travel. Away from the holiday, it's still high season compared with the rainy months.

If you hate crowds, visit Nguyen Hue early in the day, before the evening strolls begin. For a local view of the riverfront, take the Saigon Waterbus from Bach Dang Wharf; it's an easy break from the busy streets, with city views along the way.
