Harbin's autumn is cool and crisp, with afternoons around 12°C and nights near freezing. Rain is limited, so you'll often get clear spells for walking around Central Street or visiting Saint Sophia Cathedral. There's enough daylight for a relaxed sightseeing day, but evenings turn cold quickly.

The weather suits city walks and indoor stops at the Heilongjiang Provincial Museum. It's less comfortable for long riverside visits or outdoor dining, especially after dark. Compared with September, October is much colder and drier; November brings freezing daytime weather.

Holidays and crowds

China's National Day holiday begins on October 1 and usually brings a busy week for domestic travel. Harbin's main sights and trains can feel crowded then, and hotel prices may rise. After the holiday, the city is generally quieter and stays outside its winter peak season.

If you hate crowds, visit after the National Day rush. October is far less busy than the winter months, when visitors come for the ice and snow attractions. Don't expect the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival in October; it takes place in winter.

For a practical route, walk Central Street north to the Flood Control Monument by the Songhua River. The riverside is exposed, so save it for a sunny afternoon rather than a cold evening. October's dry weather makes the walk appealing, but it isn't a month for lingering outdoors late.
