When to go to Goyang-si: a seasonal guide

Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

May and October are the best times to visit, and April is just as good. All three get an Excellent rating. Days are mild, skies are fairly clear, and you can walk all afternoon without sweating through your shirt. May is a little wetter than April or October, but it's still pleasant.

So this is when you'll want Ilsan Lake Park, a big lake with paths that suit a slow loop on foot or by bike. The Goyang International Flower Festival is usually held at the lake park in spring. Dates change from year to year, so check before you book flights. Mornings in April still feel crisp, with lows around 5°C, but by May the nights are mild.

Travelling with kids? Spring weekends are busy with local families, though it never feels crushing. October is quieter, and it has the clearest, driest feel of the year.

Summer: hot, then very wet

Once spring fades, June is warm and fine for getting out, though rain starts to build. Then the monsoon season, called jangma in Korean, arrives. July is the wettest month by far, with 360 mm of rain and showers on 19 days. August is the hottest month, with highs of 29°C and sticky nights, and it's still very wet.

Be honest with yourself here: outdoor plans can wash out. If you do come, lean on indoor stops. Aeon-style malls and the big shopping centres around Ilsan, plus the KINTEX exhibition centre, keep you dry and cool. You can also hop on the subway into Seoul. Goyang is on Line 3, so the capital's museums are easy to reach.

Summer is also school holiday time in Korea, so expect more families at indoor attractions.

Winter: cold, dry and quiet

When the heat and rain finally let go, December to February is the cold, clear stretch. January is the coldest month, with lows of -7°C, and it's the least comfortable time to come. Rain is light, but sun is limited to around five hours a day. Snow is possible, but it's not a ski trip. If you want slopes, you'd head further out of town.

Winter suits you if you hate crowds and want a city-break pace. Spend your time in Seoul's palaces and markets, then come home to a warm room. Try hot dishes like kimchi stew or tteokguk, a rice cake soup, which many people eat around Lunar New Year in late January or February.

Which month for which trip

So which month should you pick? For walking, cycling and lake views, aim for May or October, with April as a close match. If you'd like a short city trip with few visitors, November is Good and calm. March is Fair, still chilly but improving, and September is Fair too, with lingering rain. Skip July and August unless you don't mind a soggy trip.
