Mild days at the pyramids

December brings pleasant days and cool evenings in Giza. Highs reach 21°C, while nights can fall to 10°C. Rain is limited, so you can spend time outdoors without summer's heavy heat. The shorter daylight hours mean there's less time for a long day out.

The Giza Plateau works well for exploring the pyramids and the Sphinx on foot. You'll be glad of the cooler air, though the open site offers little shade. Save a rooftop meal near the pyramids for the evening, when the air feels crisp.

Holiday crowds

December is part of Egypt's busy winter travel season. Christmas and New Year bring extra visitors, especially around the Giza Plateau, and prices can be higher than in quieter summer months. It's not the busiest time everywhere, but expect more company at famous sights.

If you hate crowds, visit the pyramids on a weekday rather than around the holiday period. You'll have a calmer visit and more room to pause for photos.

Make the most of your visit

There's no major December festival in Giza that's as well known as Cairo's Coptic Christmas celebrations in January. Still, the holiday season brings a festive feel to hotels and restaurants, and many travellers use Giza as a base for seeing Cairo.

At the plateau, agree on a camel ride price before you set off. The sellers may approach you near the pyramids, and a clear price avoids an awkward disagreement later. For a quieter break after sightseeing, try koshari, a filling mix of rice, pasta, lentils and tomato sauce, at a local restaurant.
