May: hot, dry days

May feels like a step into summer. Afternoons near the Pyramids of Giza can be fiercely hot, while evenings cool down. There's no rain to interrupt a visit, and long sunny days suit outdoor sightseeing.

Go to the Giza Plateau early, then spend the hottest part of the day somewhere shaded or indoors. The plateau has little shade, so don't plan a long walk between the pyramids and the Sphinx at midday. May can still work well for a shorter visit, but it's less comfortable than the cooler months from November to March.

Holidays and local life

May Day is a public holiday in Egypt. Sham el-Nessim, a spring holiday celebrated with picnics and foods such as salted fish, can also fall in May, though its date changes each year. It's a chance to see families enjoying the day, but some services may run differently on public holidays.

Crowds and practical tips

May is outside Giza's most popular cool-season window, so you'll generally find fewer winter visitors. Prices may be easier than during the high season, though exact deals depend on your dates. The trade-off is the heat: June gets hotter still.

At the Giza Plateau, follow the marked paths rather than accepting an unsolicited camel ride or lift. Agree on any ride and its price before setting off, so you can enjoy the view without a surprise argument later.
