Visiting Giza in September
September heat at the plateau
September still feels like summer in Giza. Days reach 36°C, with clear skies, strong sun and no rain; evenings cool to around 21°C. It's a little less fierce than August, but the midday heat can make the open Giza Plateau tiring.
The Great Pyramid, Sphinx and nearby tombs are worth seeing, but save the long walks between them for the cooler parts of the day. The Egyptian Museum in central Cairo makes a good indoor break. Skip a long camel ride across the plateau in the afternoon, when there's little shade.
Events and quieter days
Coptic New Year, called Nayrouz, falls around September 11. It's a religious observance rather than a major street festival, so don't expect big public celebrations around the pyramids. The Islamic holiday marking the Prophet Muhammad's birthday follows a lunar calendar and can fall in September in some years.
If you hate crowds, September is generally calmer than the popular November-to-March season. It's still a busy sight, but you may find fewer tour groups than in the cooler months. Hotels and tours can also cost less than in peak season, though prices vary.
Make the heat work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep the Giza Plateau visit short, then take a cool break before heading back out.
For a practical plan, go to the plateau early and see the Sphinx before walking towards the pyramids. There's little shade along the way, and the sun feels stronger on the open sand. A late visit can work too, but check the site's closing time before setting out. If you want a cooler day trip, Alexandria has milder conditions in September, though it's a longer journey from Giza.
