Freetown Weather in April

April's warm, humid days

April is hot in Freetown, with daytime highs around 32°C and nights staying warm. Humidity is high, so even a short walk through central Freetown can feel sticky. Rain is still limited, though showers fall on several days; May brings a much sharper rise in rainfall.

You can enjoy Lumley Beach, visit the National Museum, or take a guided walk at Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Save longer uphill walks for a cooler part of the day, and don't count on a dry afternoon every day. If you hate crowds, April is usually calmer than the December and January peak.

Independence Day and Easter

Sierra Leone's Independence Day falls on 27 April. Expect public celebrations, and check local arrangements if you're heading across town that day. Easter can also fall in April, but its dates change each year; church services may affect opening hours.

Quieter than peak season

April sits between the dry-season rush and the wetter months. It's generally less busy than December and January, so you may find a calmer feel around popular sights and less pressure on accommodation. Prices can vary, though, and the Independence Day holiday may bring more local visitors.

For a practical airport transfer, compare the Freetown–Lungi water taxi with the road-and-ferry route before you arrive. The water taxi crosses the estuary directly; the road journey uses the ferry at Tagrin and takes longer. Check current service details locally, especially around the holiday.
