Hiking is possible, but the climb can feel hard in the midday heat. Save it for a cooler part of the day.

February doesn't bring a major fixed national holiday in Sierra Leone. Valentine's Day is marked on 14 February, and you may notice couples heading out around Aberdeen and Lumley. February is still in the dry season, so beaches and popular sights can draw visitors, though the busiest holiday period has passed. It's generally a calmer time than December and January, but don't expect the quietest prices of the year: those months are popular partly because the weather is so reliable. March gets hotter and brings a little more rain.

Travelling with kids? A beach afternoon at Lumley is an easier outing than a long hike in the heat. For Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, arrange your ride from central Freetown with the sanctuary's location in mind: it's inland near Regent, not on the coast. That makes the trip a better fit for a dedicated half-day than a quick stop between beach visits.
