Dry season: December to April

If you want beaches and easy travel, come in the dry season. Days are sunny, roads are drivable, and the sea is calm enough for a proper swim. December and January are our pick for Freetown. The air is a little drier then, and the evenings feel kind.

Harmattan is a dusty wind from the Sahara. It usually blows in from December to February and can leave a haze over the sky. Views from Freetown's hills get softer, and flights can occasionally be affected. Still, it's a small price for dry days on Lumley or River No. 2 beach.

By April it's the hottest month in Freetown, at 32°C. Afternoons feel heavy and sticky, so plan for swims and shade at midday.

Rainy season: May to October

Rain builds from May and peaks hard. July is the wettest month in Freetown at 805 mm. No other month in our data is given for comparison, but you'll feel it. Downpours can be heavy and daily, and some roads upcountry turn to mud.

Is it a write-off? Not quite. Hills turn bright green, and prices at some lodges drop. But boat trips to Bunce Island or Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary can get messy, and beach days are unreliable. If you hate being stuck indoors, skip July and August.

Holidays, crowds and seasons

High season runs roughly November to February, helped by the dry weather and visitors from the diaspora (Sierra Leoneans living abroad) coming home for Christmas. Flights and rooms fill up, so this is when booking early really matters. Low season is the rains.

Christmas and New Year are big, with street parties and beach gatherings around Freetown. Independence Day on 27 April is a national holiday, and it falls in the hot end of the dry season. Eid, which moves each year, also brings celebrations and busy roads because many families travel.

Our data covers Freetown only. Upcountry areas, such as Tiwai Island or Outamba-Kilimi, follow the same broad pattern, but wet-season roads there are far harder. For most trips, aim for December or January.
