May feels made for exploring

Faro in May feels warm and bright, without June's stronger heat. Afternoons reach about 22°C, and rain is limited to around four days. You'll get long daylight hours for wandering the Cidade Velha, Faro's old town, or taking a boat through the Ria Formosa.

May suits walking, wildlife watching and relaxed beach time at Praia de Faro. The sea may still feel cool for a long swim, so plan on sand and sunshine more than swimming. Rain is possible, but it's less frequent than in April. Save indoor time for a wet spell, perhaps at the Municipal Museum in the old convent.

May 1 is Portugal's Labour Day, a public holiday. Some shops and services may close, though the historic centre and waterfront are still pleasant places to explore. May doesn't bring Faro's biggest annual festival; the city's main celebrations, Festa da Ria Formosa, usually take place later in the year.

If you hate crowds, May is a good middle ground. It's busier than the quieter winter months, but usually calmer than peak summer, when Algarve beaches fill up. Prices tend to sit between low-season winter rates and summer highs, though specific costs vary.

Take the ferry from Faro's waterfront to Ilha Deserta for a quieter beach day. Check the day's return times at the Cais da Porta Nova before setting out, as you can't simply walk back to town. If the breeze picks up, come back for cataplana, a local seafood stew, in the old town.
